Abc Grey's Anatomy proves they are no different than the rest of us when faced with job uncertainity - the first instinct that sets in is fear. Fear of job loss, while we all think we fear losing our jobs it is the fear of the unknown that is terrifying. With Chief Weber locked in his office, the fear of the unknown makes everyone panic for their jobs. For doctors and surgeons they are used to dealing with facts and information from tests that give them information to solve the unknown. When there are no answers, surgeons try to rapidly create a plan for uncertainity because that is what they do. If someone is hurt, they make a plan for how to heal them.
Dr. Christina Yang is fearful for her job, and has no allies in her corner. She's been kicked off of Dr. Bailey's services. She tries to align herself in Pediatric with Arizona Robinson - the only problem is Christina is not one to play or interact with children. How long can she keep up the charade? Just about until her roommate squeals on her.
Another classic reaction to fear is flight or fight, while many doctors, attending, and residents are fighting for their jobs Callie takes flight in looking for a job in another state. This plan might sound like a good one to Callie, but Callie's girlfriend tells her she will not do a long distance relationships. It looks like love is stoping Callie in her tracks, and love will give her a reason to fight for her job!
It is the veterans that seem to have a carved out notch that have the confidence to calmly handle the merger. I love Dr. Mark Sloane's comment "I reattach babies arms that's why I do not have to worry." So, often in uncertainity we forget that our skills and expertise have value. In this moment Mark shows both that he has great employee loyalty to the hospital and the calmness of wisdom to survive the merger.
Derrick is most affected by all the merger on a personal level because he feels partly responsible because in his eyes if he had taken the job this would not have happened. He wants answers from the chief and feels that the chief owes him something for having his back. The chief does not see it that way because he is fighting to keep his hospital. That's right in Chief Weber's eyes it is his hospital - the problem here is that the chief is losing objectivity.
